This joint project between Aarhus University and GEUS will collect seismic data and seabed samples in the northeast Baffin Bay and south of the Nares Strait. The objectives are: (1) To map the Pleistocene sediment packages on the glaciated continental margin of northwest Greenland. (2) To obtain sedimentary archives of changes in ocean conditions linked with ice sheet variability, deep-water formation and Arctic-Atlantic water-mass exchange over centennial-millennial time scales. (3) To detect potential signatures of extra-terrestrial impact events in NW Greenland. (4) To study benthic bacterial communities in high Arctic marine sediments. The high-resolution seismic data will provide new knowledge on sedimentary processes that builds up the glaciated margin and visualize potential geohazards. Sediment cores from the northern study area will be analysed using a multiproxy approach including organic biomarkers, sedimentology and micropaleontology to study the history of ice conditions in this sensitive region that encompasses the North Water Polynya. This expedition funded by DCH (Dansk Center for Havforskning) and Geocenter Danmark (ENIGMA project) will test and break in HDMS Lauge Koch as a platform for marine studies across a range bio- and geoscience disciplines.
