MOSAIC is the first year-round expedition exploring the coupled climate system in the central Arctic with modern icebreakers. It is designed by an international consortium of leading polar research institutions under the umbrella of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), lead by the Alfred Wegner Institute (AWI). The backbone of MOSAIC is the year-round operation of RV Polarstern, drifting with the sea ice across the central Arctic from September 2019 to September 2020.

Science / project summary

Dr. Tonboe will collect data needed for developing a sea ice forward operation, which can be used for data assimilation in numerical models and inversion of satellite data for retrieval of snow and sea ice physical parameters. In particular, to develop process models characterizing the parameters which are important for remote sensing (snow stratigraphy, ice salinity etc.) and to develop forward models linking between the sea ice physics and the sea ice surface emission and scattering (emission and backscatter models). Dr. Tonboe will, among other things:

  1. Collect data to examine the snow surface temperature uncertainties measured by infrared radiometers in terms of spatial variability and snow surface conditions
  2. Characterise the spatial variability of backscatter from different ice types and the processes for snow and sea ice roughness in order to reduce uncertainties in radar altimetry retrieval of ice thickness
  3. Collect data relevant for building process models and for analysing dielectric measurements and microwave radiometer data
