Science / project summary
The PI will continue efforts at Store Glacier in Greenland. A major west Greenland outlet to the inland ice sheet, Store Glacier produces ~14–18 cubic km of ice per year, flowing at a speed of 4.2–4.9 km, second only in output to Sermeq Kujaleq (a.k.a. Jakobshavn Glacier) east of Ilulissat (Weidick and Bennicke, 2007). Store glacier undergoes mid-summer deceleration likely related to the effects of subglacial meltwater and drainage system processes; data suggest that drainage of supraglacial lakes and water-filled crevasses results in a 40–60% mid-summer speed decrease (Howat et al. 2010). Building on field campaigns in 2008, 2009, and 2010, the PI will conduct a "holistic" study of ice-ocean-climate interactions, combining observations from oceanographic sensors; on-ice continuous GPS; automatic weather stations (AWS); time lapse cameras; tide gauges; and aircraft and satellite remote sensing. The work is a collaboration between Byrd Polar Research Center and UK collaborators from U. Wales Aberystwith and St. Andrews, Scotland.
