Our international European Union funded research project MULSEDRO -MULti-Sensor DROne comprises a consortium of Danish, Finish and German research institutions (Helmholtz Institute for Exploration Technology Freiberg, Germany – HZDR-HIF), national geological surveys (GTK and Geus) and companies (Radai Oy, Finland, and DMT GmbH, Germany) that develops and uses advanced drone systems that are equipped with geophysical and remote sensing sensors for mineral explorations.

In August 2019, we plan to perform drone based magnetic, hyperspectral and stereophotogrammetry surveys with both multi-copter and fixed-wing drones on three sites on Northern Disko Island . The objective of these investigations is to test these new geophysical and remote sensing approaches/techniques in artic environments and on sites that are considered of relevance for mineral exploration activities (in this case potential sulfide and gold deposits) and general geological mapping. The surveys from the fixed wing drones typically cover several square kilometers and provide uniform systematic hyperspectral and magnetic maps on a larger scale; the surveys from multi-copter drones are smaller (some 100 x 100 m), but provide very high resolution (dm to m scale) due to dense data coverage and low-altitude flying. Multi-copter data acquisition is therefore limited to target areas of particular high interest. The drone borne surveys are planned to be complemented with ground-based measurements as ground-based magnetic, magnetic susceptibility, handhold XRF and spectroradiometer datasets and collection of rock samples for later analysis in the laboratory.  Ground-based measurements have the aim to build up a direct links between anomalies and patterns observed in the drone-borne geophysical and remote sensing datasets and the detailed outcropping geology.

We will visit three locations in Northern Disko at these campaign: (1) The wider area  around the Illukunnguaq dike ( N 69° 52' 36'' / E -52° 32' 38''), (2) the wider area close to the old mining town Quillssat (N 70°  05' 07''/E -53° 00' 12'') and a third area further to the east close to Nuugaarsuk (N 69° 49' 46'' / E -52° 11' 22'') .
