Polar Bear Encounters - Precautions in Polar Bear Land

Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland

Invitation to an afternoon dedicated to polar bears and how to act when visiting their habitat. Three scientists with many years of experience in conducting fieldwork in remote  areas of Greenland share their recipe of how to prevent fatal encounters with the big white bear.  You will meet:

  • Chief Consultant Jørgen Bojesen-Koefoed will go through  GEUS’ guidelines for the use of firearms and other means of protection when carrying out fieldwork in Greenland
  • Senior scientist Peter Alsen will talk about polar bear behaviour and give a practical demonstration of a  GEUS polar bear alarm
  • Senior Advisor Jens Therkelsen tells the story about the polar bear that had the polar bear alarm go off while in the tent having their morning coffee

In connection with each talk/demonstration there will be time for questions and discussion.

The talk will be given in English or Danish according to the needs of the audience – anyone interested is invited!

Kind regards,
Marianne Vestergaard and Uli Heyden
