Science / project plan

Near the conclusion of GEUS’ 2013 field campaign in in Peary Land and Kronprins Christian Land a hitherto unknown succession of Triassic-age marine black shales were discovered in the inner parts of Kilen, Kronprins Christian Land. The deposits have appeared in consequence of recent retreat of the Flade Isblink icecap. The succession is important for the understanding of the geological evolution of the greater North Atlantic, including the Barents Shelf during the Mesozoic, but for logistical reasons and lack of time, a detailed study was not feasible in 2013. As a follow-up on the discovery, fieldwork will be carried out in the area in August 2016 with the aim of producing a thorough account of the succession. The trip is sponsored by GEUS. The expedition will be based in Station Nord, and make use of a helicopter present in the region to provide transportation for a number of stakeholders from various institutions.
